Things To Think About Before Changing Career
Today we have so many employment opportunities that most people think about changing career when they face even the slightest hardship in the present job. The tenacity index has been experiencing a steady dip with each passing generation. Talking about shifting professions, it is worth mentioning a sequence in a movie. An ex-military man, who lost his job in the army because of some “technical” problem, joined a studio as photographer. All the photos he took turn out to be out of focus. On questioning the ex-soldier revealed that the minor “technical” problem that resulted in his ouster from the army is poor eyesight. So, if you change the field of activity just like that, you will end up searching for a suitable job all your life.
Need For Self Introspection Before Changing Career
The most common cause of people opting for a new profession is dissatisfaction in their existing job. If that is the reason why you also plan to change your career, then you need to analyze things clearly. What is the reason for dissatisfaction? Is it the company, colleagues, boss, work environment or yourself? You have to carry out a truthful introspection of yourself. If your behavior and attitude are the problem, then you can try changing those. If you do not have necessary skill sets, you can attend training classes to improve or develop skills.
Also, if colleagues and boss are the problem, you can try moving to some other team. If the company is the problem, there are a number of companies outside, as you very well know. You cannot practically try out all the options mentioned above before making the switch. But at least they are worth considering.
Also never change a particular career for monetary benefits and social status alone. If your skills are hopeless for the current job, then you may have no other option than to leave. But if you are not bad in your present job, changing career should be done only after weighing all factors.
It is natural for long-serving employees to develop a sense of frustration in their job. Familiarity is well known to breed contempt. Lack of promotion or salary hike adds fuel to this burning contempt. If you go for a change of profession, all these years you have spent on the job will be wasted. It is better to talk with the employers for a change in position or role than to think about changing career.
The Challenges Of A New Career
So what about the requirements of the new job? You may get a better salary. Are you sure you will get more respect and job satisfaction? If the organization downsizes or is on the verge of collapse, you will have to look for a new job or profession. But before selecting a particular field, you will have to make sure that you have the necessary skill sets and temperament required in such fields.
Also, it is often said that one will find the virtues of present job only after getting another job. Problems of work environment, boss, and salary exist in almost every organization. But if it is related to skills or job satisfaction, it is better to think about changing career.
