IT Skills
Information on IT skills is in abundance.
And the trouble with many people, is that IT skills are something that are acquired though the passage of time. You get to use a computer and off you go, picking up bits of the terminology and practices as you go.
But, the problem with this self taught approach, is that you are only using a small part of the potential of a computer’s power.
Think about a computer for a minute. Consider that an average desktop these days has more computer power than a mainframe in the 1970s. And we have become complacent about their role in our lives.
So when it comes to IT skills, we could all do with learning these via proper courses. Obviously schools do have to concentre on the three Rs, but more time should be given over to IT.
Being taught proper IT skills would allow a person to maximise their time with a computer. Think about some of the applications a computer can handle in its stride. You can easily write and edit a novel with even the simplest of word processing packages. You could calculate the accounts of a major public company with even a basic spread-sheet application. And if you want to build a data base of contacts, or facts, then you have applications at your fingertips that would do the job very nicely thank you.
But most people fire up their trusty computer, whether at home, or at work, and way they go, using what they know and trust. How many people have the time to sit down and really understand the application they are using. That’s where IT skills really come to the fore. If you really understand the word processing package you are using, then it will save you huge amounts of time and effort. And who has really sat back and thought what some of the superb spread-sheets applications can achieve?
What you have to remember is that very clever computer programmers have designed very clever software applications for you to use and exploit; yet most people will use only about 19% of their potential. So all that cleverness is going to waste.
So when it comes to getting information on IT skills, do yourself a favour and get with it, it might make your life a lot easier.
